I bought this for my six-year-old son, and he loved it. His goal was to use up all the yarn to make the longest knitted rope he could. The yarn quality in this kit is low (it doesn't stay twisted very well) but my son didn't care. The plastic tool they provide is not very useful, so I substituted a plastic crochet hook.
